Maxillofacial Surgery

Maxillofacial Surgery

Did you know?

An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS) has extensive medical and dental training that requires a dual degree: One in medicine and another in dentistry.

This can involve up to 14 years of training, covering a vast array of treatments for the head and neck, from facial trauma requiring extensive reconstruction to extracting wisdom teeth, in order to provide comprehensive jaw and face reconstruction, and oral rehabilitation care.

At iSmile Costa Rica our Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Jose Francisco Dittel, is to help you diagnose and provide surgical treatment of diseases, injuries, and/or deformity or birth defects. Following are just a few of the reasons you should come to iSmile for your maxillofacial surgery:

• You need tooth extraction, surgical or otherwise.
• You need one or more teeth replaced with dental implants.
• You want to know whether you are a candidate for cosmetic surgery due to birth defects, facial trauma, disease, and/or aging.
• You have sleep apnea or other breathing problems.
• You have chronic facial pain disorders.
• You have TMJ and your jaw joint(s) need surgical repair.
• You need cysts or tumors in the face or jaw (benign or malignant) diagnosed and treated.
• You’re looking for cleft lip and palate reconstruction.
• Your jaw needs to be aligned with orthognathic surgery.
• You have had cancer surgery and need facial and/or jaw reconstruction.
• You’ve had a facial trauma and bones need to be realigned.

INJURIES: Understandably, injuries to the face carry a high degree of emotional as well as physical trauma to patients. The science and art of treating these injuries requires special training involving an understanding of how the treatment will affect the patient's long-term appearance and function. Our Maxillofacial surgeon with the iSmile Costa Rica is trained, skilled and uniquely qualified to manage and treat facial injuries such as:

• Facial lacerations
• Intra oral lacerations
• Fractured facial bones (cheek, nose, or eye socket)
• Fractured jaws (upper and lower jaw)

There are many causes for facial injuries to teeth, skin, and bones, but the most common are:

• Motor vehicle accidents
• Accidental falls
• Sports injuries
• Work-related injuries

Fractures of the bones of the face, such as the lower jaw, upper jaw, palate, cheekbones, and eye sockets, may affect one’s vision, and ability to breathe, speak, and perhaps even swallow. Our surgeon will consider various factors, such as the location and severity of the fracture, and the age and general health of the patient, when deciding which specific form of treatment to use. An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is an excellent choice for management of these types of facial injuries.

DISEASE: Treatment by an OMS for disease may include soft tissue problems such as reaction to drugs or materials in the mouth, irritation, infection, and mineral deficiency. There may be tumors of soft tissue or bone, bone cysts, and skin or oral cancers. These can be removed and reconstruction may be included.

When reconstruction is needed, Dr. Dittel can diagnose, surgically treat and repair all aspects of your oral and facial condition -- the combination of training in dentistry, medicine, and head and neck, and cosmetic surgery offers a complete understanding of all facial elements. He can use various techniques from simple closure to complicated tissue transfers; he may reconfigure the jaws and facial anatomy to create an attractive, natural appearance; he can correct a faulty bite. For reconstructive purposes, soft tissues (skin, mucosa, fat, muscle) and hard tissues (bone, cartilage) can be taken from various parts of a patient’s own body, depending on the size and shape required, or the materials can be from donated or engineered tissues.

With today’s state-of-the-art technology, at iSmile we have available computerized surgical planning, custom prosthesis design, robotics, and patient-specific rehabilitation. That means we can optimize goal-directed care for any number of complex conditions.

COSMETIC: Our process at iSmile starts with an analysis of your facial and dental proportions. We help you understand the relationship between your teeth, gums, and lips, and how our smile design process will give you a brilliant, healthy smile. By adhering to our cutting-edge design system, our team of dentists can present you with a clear, easy to understand treatment plan.

DENTAL TREATMENTS: The range of dentistry, from tooth extraction to full mouth restorations is an area of great expertise for the OMS. Treatments encompass many procedures such as:

• Placement of dental implants
• Biopsies of any mouth lesions
• Trimming away of any excess gum or bone tissue
• Bone grafting
• Exposing teeth to help the orthodontist
• Removal of chronic infections around teeth following a root canal
• Tooth extraction

Wisdom teeth extraction is a concern for many young people. The reason for most of these extractions is because there is not enough space for them, and that causes them to become mal-aligned, which can cause pain, pressure, infection, and damage to adjacent molars. If a tooth is located under the gum or bone tissue, it is classified as an impacted tooth, and surgical removal is needed. It’s usually advisable to do the procedure while young because the risk is lowest then.
